I purchased a beautiful 2008 Ultra Classic 1 1/2 yrs ago. It only had 20K mi. and looked to be in new condition. Since I've owned the bike, I have been broken down on 4 separate occasions. Once was due to a bad battery, but the first major break down was due to a check valve that went bad while driving down the hwy. The second breakdown was on a trip and the bike wouldn't start after stopping for gas. That time it was the fuel pump that went bad. Now, a couple of wks ago the fuel pressure regulator went bad and the bike just quit while riding down the hwy. I have also had the rear break light switch go bad. I have always ridden Hondas because of Harley's reputation for building an unreliable product. I was told that the newer Harley's were much better quality, but you can't convince me of that. I'm going back to Honda.
I bought mine new and had major problems in 15k and 20k....compensator and counterbalance both went out. Things happen. But if you feel another brand of bike is better for you, then I'd go with that. I don't blame anyone for doing what they feel is best.
I've heard other horror stories as well. And with other manufacturers, but my '02 has 90k on it and not one single problem. I've never had to fix anything. I've done preventative maintenance, and of course just maintenance, but that's it.
Also on BMW forum where there are bytches about them too. What I gather is no bike is perfect. But you fix it and ride it because you love to ride bikes. Now if you love to bytch, because you were whiny as a child, than nothing will change that.
