Hell I have helmets laying around in dry storage that old plus wearing them a few years and I would have no problem putting one on today.

If styrofoam is deteriorating you got bigger problems.

I wear a 1970 Arai 3/4, and the styrofoam is still in great shape. I have a number of helmets from the 70's and 80's that are still in good shape and wear well. I feel perfectly safe wearing any one of them. I have had liners breakdown and disintegrate, but I have yet to see any deterioration of the styrofoam in any my helmets. Nevertheless, your findings may be different!

Well I guess as long as you feel safe, then you must be safe! There is a difference between decomposing and losing it's impact absorbing ability, but who cares because it does feel perfectly safe.

Excuse me, I failed to address the difference between decomposing and impact absorbing ability. About 950,000 years for styrofoam start losing it's impact absorbing ability. Happy now?

There's absolutely no evidence that proves an old helmet is less safe than a new one, but who cares because the helmet manufacturers, who want to sell you a new helmet every 3 years, say that old helmets are unsafe.

Better to be safe and a chump than to take the chance and be dead.

In that case we should all buy $800 helmets because we're told they're safer than $100 ones. Better safe and a chump.....right?

Is there evidence that proves an old helmet is as safe as a new one? I guess one of those 950,000 year old pieces of foam would be plenty good enough for protecting what's in your noggin.

I am pretty sure if the helmet is kept in a climate controlled environment it will take a lot longer to start decomposing. If foam starts to deteriorate it usually starts to crumble, I have had stuff made of foam in my attic start to get sticky or powdery well this helmet had no signs of that. I am pretty sure the folks at Shoei wanted me to by a new model ....

I think 90% is too high of a number. I have lived in Florida & Michigan and still wear a helmet (by choice) as does 4 out of 5 people who I ride with.

I would like to see your data for the 10X higher per capita; all the data I've seen indicates the accident and fatality rates actually decrease in pro choice states.
