Orange County Choppers
I think I could build something as good if notbetter than their 'production' bikes. Betting that the Discovery Channel won't come film meinmy little-*** garage though.
I wouldhave loved the opportunity to try the 'Build or Bust'...I believe I couldadoneit.

I also specified their 'production' bikes...which are not really any different than a Big Dog oa an Iron Horse. Never claimed I could build a 'theme' bike.
A lot of people around here will believe ANYTHING they are told by Hollywood. Yeah, those choppers are totally cool! Oh,and since they make lots of money then those of us not impressed must be losers!
My only beef with them concerns my only contact with them. A friend of mine was hit by a drunk teenager about two years ago. He was on his Dyna, and had not even made the first payment on it. She crossed over the center line and t-boned him...and left him for dead. He ended up losing the lower half of his left leg (from just below the knee). This guy is a special Ed teacher/coach at a local high school here, and is just a super guy.
Anyway, I emailed OCC to ask them if the fellas had any ideas on how to adapt is bike to accommodate his prosthetic leg. I did not want them to give us anything, or even actually do anything, just wanted advice. They told me that they really don't do bikes like that, and had no advice for me. It wasn't three months later when the unveiled a bike for a guy that was in a wheel chair. I was pretty amazed that they blew me off like that, when all they had to do was provide me with the names of a few shops that could help us out.
Anyway, we held some fund raisers to help him offset the medical bills, and to we had some money leftover (he did anyway) to get his bike fixed. The damage to the bike was about 6000.00. In addition to gettng it fixed, he had a three-wheel adapter and and electric shifter put on it. He is in the process of going back to two wheels now. He will keep the electric shifter.
The reason he had to repair the bike on his own was due to his insurance check being ONE day late, and they denied the claim. The girl had no insurance either, and served three months in jail. She took a week to turn herself in after she hit him..
Anyway, long story longer, I was disappointed with them not taking some interest in our story. But I would bet they get a lot of that, so it is understandable.
I don't watch the show anymore, but I did enjoy them in Wild Hogs.
You guys did it right by just going out and holding fund raisers for your friend. That way you didn't need to depend on anyone other then your wits to accomplish your goal of helping your buddy pay his medical debts. Good for you but you should not be down on OCC. They were under no obligation to help. Hell you were lucky they responded at all.
I hate to be such a hard *** on this subject but they are livin the American dream and I say "good for them". There probably isn't one reader of this thread in their right mind who wouldn't love to be in their shoes. I know I would...
well, I sure dont care for most of the bikes they build, and I have heard plenty stories about raging egos and such, but, in the big picture, they brought publicity, good or bad, to the custom motorcycle industry...and I am sure many others have reaped some of the benefits....I mean, would there even be a Biker Build Off show, if OCC didnt bring in the ratings, to the Discovery Channel...
As far as contempt...well, I had a friend who went to get and autograph one time, waited in line for a couple of hours, then once he got up there, they didn't even look at him or acknowledge his existance. Sign the autograph and move them along, like a freakin' production line. Sometimes fame can make you forget about the people who got you there. I don't hate them, but if I ever saw one of them broke down on the side of the road alone, I'd just keep riding by.

You are right, they are under no obligation to help anyone. I just got the impression from them that they were a bigger part of the biker community that they actually are. They are a business that sells bikes, and nothing more. Sadly, there are now, imo, a shell of what they were when the began.
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
These things might bring them some publicity but I don't think that's why they do it. The Yankees bike that was auctioned off for $150,000, it sits in the OCC Store. Guess who bought it? Guess who bought the bike at the Intrepid auction?
