I heard from a tech that does the auto tensioner installs that if you remove the primary drive chain, polish the outer chain surface on a mechanical polisher, re-lube the chain, and reinstall, that the noise will go away. Another benefit of the chain polish is it reduces the wear on the tensioner block which reduces the frequency at which it must be changed.

Ok these posts are pretty old, but they helped me out. Just finished installing a chain adjuster on a 03 Wide Glide and found all the same issues as listed here. The whining noise drives me crazy, but I can't say I did not have it before, it just sounds louder. Only had about a 1/2 inch of free play to the top part of the chain when install was completed and the adjuster rose to about 3/4 of its range. By the way, I also have a 24 toothengine sprocket installed. Bike seems to run good though, very responsive! Does anyone know if a tight chain will cause problems? Manual says it actually gets tighter as everthing heats up.
