Question Zumo handlebar installation

I paid the stiff list price for an HD Zumo 660 and also bought a chrome attachment to mount it on the handlebar of my Heritage Softail, which set me back another $130. The instructions for the mounting attachment are mostly about wiring, and recommend professional installation. They also say that the electrical hookup requires purchase of a special wiring harness. Paying for installation and the harness would run the total cost above $1000(!) So I'm wondering whether to install the Zumo without wiring and run it off its own battery.

If you've run a Zumo off its own battery, how has that worked out? How many hours of use do you get before you have to recharge?

I have had 2 handlebar mounts put on my touring bikes. I have never had to buy any additional wiring. The mounts came with all the wiring.

My RG power was hooked up inside the fairing and the RK power was hooked up inside the headlight. I had my Indy do it.

Search youtube, I am sure someone has various ways of getting power with buying additional wiring.

Surely all you need is power, no?

I would imagine it charges from a mini/micro USB cable? Or even if it's a proprietary socket, it comes with a charging/sync lead that ends in a regular full size USB connector.

If so, just buy a $20 USB charging socket lead, wire that to your battery or accessory power, run it up to the bars and you're done.

I had the 665 installed on my limited, I did buy and the NIM cable and the HD Bomm, the cable was around 165.00 and another 100 for the HD Bomm. You need the NIM if you are wiring it to play and sound off thru the factory stereo, the HD bomm for phone calls. I mounted the unit but felt all of the wiring was over my head so I paid to have that done, cost me under 200 bucks.

Same setup on my Road King with no additional wires. Ran mine under the tank console but you can take it under the tank as well. Just try to keep as far away from engine heat as possible. Some split tubing might not be a bad idea. Went straight to the battery.

I just installed a zumo 665 on my street bob. Used the ram mounting system with the zumo motorcycle cradle it came with. My SB did not have a accessory plug so i used part #72673-11 so plug into the data link plug to draw power when the key is on.

Ran all the wire under the tank to under the seat pan for a clean appearance

Really easy job to do, just took me longer to find a plug to run power from. Your bike may have extra plugs under the seat just for this. My gps is right under my quarter faring and works like a champ.

I really dig that setup, center mounted like you have. Unfortunately I am putting on a mount similar to yours but being used for speedometer, tach and cut for remaining gauges. Like I said in my post I have the HD handlebar mount but just seems to take away from the cool factor when you are running apes. I may have to change things up when I get my bike back on the road, hopefully within the month. I do still have a ball mount that I bought when I first using a GPS that I have thought about but my apes are being painted as well and I sure do not want to screw with the paint.

This is what I'm going to do.

I bought a regular GPS though (garmin nuvi 2597 I believe), for around 150, and a weather resistance mount for the handlebars. I got about 2 hours on my GPS without battery.

Just yesterday I got my battery tender from amazon, and I'm still waiting for the cig lighter adapter you can plug in to the wires you leave mounted to the battery from the tender.
