Hello,Several days ago the 15 amp fuse to my 2007 Road Glide instruments burned out.I have no odometer, speedometer, tach, or any gauges working. Everything elseis fine and the bike operates fine. I replaced the 15 amp fuse with a 30 ampfuse and it also burned out. I put in a 15 amp fuse today and it burnedout again. I did notice a part hanging out from under the tach /speedometer console, HD: 74419-96, which appears to be for the air temperaturegauge. It must have jarred loose. Any ideas on where I should look to solve theissue of the fuse burning out? Thank you, Chuck
It's not a good idea to replace a 15 amp with a 30 amp. However, since the 30 amp blew, it's obviously got a power short to ground somewhere.
It could be as simple as a pinched wire in the handlebar control housings, a rubbed through wire in one of the circuits or a shorted bulb or socket, something in the power outlet in the fairing.
That's the accessory fuse so there's a lot on it. If you don't have a service manual, start by inspecting wiring and bulbs, loosening handlebar control housings and wiggling them. You may simply have to unplug things on the circuit and listen for the fuse to pop as you plug them in.
Ed, Thanks for the information and advice. Currently all the accessories work (power outlet works fine). The lights for the tach and speedometer work but the tach and speedometer do not. Nor does any of the four gauges (and their respective lights), the neutral light, the "6" gear indicator, and oil lamp (my guess is the low fuel light does not work as well so I buy gas often). The cruise control still works (just do not know how fast I'm going). The headlights, tail lights, turn indicators and their lights all work. I'll pull the front fairing when I get time. Chuck, I thought from the initial description it was the accessory fuse - no matter, the theory will be the same. I would start simple before pulling the fairing. Look along the frame, rear fender, wiggle wires.
If the speed sensor is on the circuit, unplug it - that kind of stuff.
It will be much easier with the Electrical Diagnostics Service manual because you will see what's on the circuit.
It's common practice to take the temp gauge sensor off it's mount and zip tie it lower by the bottom of the fairing in the air stream so it reads air instead of headlight heat.
Rather than buy a bucket of fuses while you are testing, you could pick up an automatic resetting circuit breaker. There are many varieties, heres a link to give you an idea.
I once worked at an automotive dealership with a hack who would install a wire in place of a fuse them look for smoke - it was unbelievable. Then we showed him one of these and at least he used it!
I discovered two frayed insulation on wires 5 and 6 (page 2-21 in 2007 Touring Models HD Electrical Diagnostic Manual) for the indicator lamps under the speedometer / tachometer console. The over wrap had come loose so the wires rubbed on the cast metal bracket for the steering. Wire 5 is for the Right Turn Ground. This was not an issue; turn signal worked fine. Wire 6 is for the Oil Pressure Lamp. I believe this exposed wire was the issue burning out the fuse. I taped both wires individually then wrapped the whole harness. No more burning out instruments fuse. Thanks to all for the advice. Safe travels and rubber side down! STLCHUCK
