Default Instruments Fuse keeps blowing

I was on my way home on the highway today, and I looked down and all my instruments were dark and not working. I checked the fuses and had a blown instrument fuse, replaced it and everything looked good. About 2 hours later went out and started the bike and the instruments are out again.

Nothing has been modified or played with at all with the instruments wiring...........it's all stock.

This is on a '05 Ultra Classic.

Any ideas what would cause this, or any ideas on what to look at for a cause?

Thanks,

Steve

Sounds like you need to pull the fairing and visually inspect the wiring to each guage.

Alsotrace theheadlight circuit sice it is "always on" just like the instrument lights.

Steve, just went through the exact same thing. I'd removed some wires from my gauges when I was in the fairing and swapped power wires inadvertently and forgot to hook them back up properly before reinstalling fairing. I didn't figure it was a big deal and went with it. Worked great for a hundred miles and poof... no nothing lol. Replaced the fuse, and they went again. I opened her back up, swapped the power wires back to where they should have been from the git go and no more issues. My advice, look for a ground issue.

That's the weird part of it.............I haven't done anything inside the fairing at all. No amps, no guage swaps, nothing at all.

I have all my lights.........headlights, passing lamps, fender tip lights, tourpak lights, and the speedo/tach lights.............but the 4 small guages are dark and none of the 6 gauges work at all.

It's got to be a chafe or something simple.............just have to find it, that's the hard part.

In the absence of a better suggestion, and obvious evidence of wire abrasion once the outer fairing is removed, I'd pull the guage wires so that all are unplugged from the gauges, then plug them back in with the ignition "on" until the fuse blew--then you'd know which wires are involved.

Also, though you haven't done anything with the wires inside the fairing, it's possible that removing the tank for engine work that a wire was pinched when the tank was re-installed.

Good luck with the fix--electrical problems are a pita, for sure.

+1
got a wire rubbed thru on something
if you are handy with a multi meter, shouldn't be hard to find.

Tonight I'll be removing the outer fairing and going over everything in there............hopefully I'll find it.

After that, it will be the tank.........that's the only thing that's been off this year.

After that, if I still can't find it................I guess I'm going old school and riding with no guages.................LOL

Found the culprit..........

Inside the fairing, while facing the front of the bike, on the left side/top of the radio, there is a large bundle of wires that branches out right at the vertical fairing support. There were 2 wires rubbed thru where they were pressed against the fairing support. I taped them up, and put a piece of plastic wire loom around the bundle to protect it in the future. Replaced the fuse, started the bike, and everything is working again.

Thanks god it was an easy fix..........I hate chasing down electrical crap.
