I'm planning on changing cones and cups on the steering. I'm getting the frame ready for the powder coating today. My question is, should I remove the cups before taking it in? If I remove them and any powder gets in the neck, I'm going to have a bugger of a time getting the new cups in. If I leave them in, I may mess up the finish on the neck because removal will, no doubt, involve welding.
Best thing to do if the powder coater knows his stuff is to have him mask it.. Doing it yourself might be OK but but typically what the guy will do a mask before bead/sand blast if he's good then clean and re-mask before powder coat.
I've been to a number of different powder coaters.. Only time I've ever been to a chrome shop was to have an aluminum rim de-chromed for powder coat.
There are other holes around a frame that need to be masked, I would leave all that to the powder-coater, although it is worth checking that he will do it. Remove the cups and any other removable bits n bobs.
