powder coating question..bondo

crazy question but i just got an old chopper frame i want to powder coat. It has bondo filling out some of the welds.. can it be powder coated over???

Standard Bondo...No. You can't powder over it. I believe there is a specific body filler that will work under powder. Hopefully one of the experts will chime in with it's name.

Ive done couple of car frames
filled with jb weld per powder coater so far so good

JB weld does OK if you are only doing a one shot powder... 2 shot, no way it will outgass even though primer. metal lab is a powder safe metal filler and that sucks too... really the only good way to do it is to brze or high temp solder in the fill areas... that is the cleanest and best way to fill for powder

Lab Metal

The only filler I have found to use when parts are to be powder coated is Lab Metal (hi temp). It's not a two part filler like Bondo and takes a while to dry. It actually contains metal powder which is why it can be powder coated.

You will need to grind out the old filler and redo with Lab Metal which is available at any Fastenal dealer. SUPER EXPENSIVE but it works.

metal lab just does not last man, if you do anything that requires more than 1 coat and tins will 90% of the time req a clear... it cracks and outgasses after full cure. we have a huge jug of it that just sits in the corner hahaha

ok so thats a no to the jb weld, no to the metal lab and bondo. Next question what about lead as a filler...or maybe brazing and grind and polish.. or just add welds and grind and polish to cosmetically acceptable way say you the experts?
