General Topics/Tech TipsDiscussion on break in periods, rider comfort, seats and pad suggestions. Tech tips as they become available will be posted here.
i just spent 4 years in hawaii riding my precious street bob, and now i am in the "north country" of new york (30 mins from canada). i am preparing for my first winter hibernation of my bike, and just wanted to know any tips someone might have from experience. the temperature will be in the negatives (-40F at the lowest) between Jan - March. My bike will be in a detached garage with NO heat source...
research form online only has these suggestions:
-wash bike
-change oils
-fill up gas tank with fuel stabilizer
If you cannot put the battery on a charger then I would take the battery out and put it someplace warm for the winter. ... Also take your handle bars off and hook them in front of a fan in your apartment/house so you can turn the fan on and pretend your riding in the wind during the long winter months... cabin fever usually hits around the end of January...
- Breathable cover, or cotton sheets, to keep dust off.
- Place ball of tinfoil in end of exhaust/muffler (keep critters out).
- Buy/connect battery tender.
Also, some might think it's unnecessary, but I also fog/oil the cylinders. Had a snowmobile engine seize in MN once...$pendy le$$on...your call.
Check your owners manual, that has quite enough info. I live further North than you, although in the UK and in almost 50 years have never spent any significant effort before storing any of my bikes. We didn't know we were supposed to back then!

Concur with HDF members above, plus get the tires off the ground with a lift, if possible, the have tires on thick carpet to avoid low spots on tires....Fuel stabilizer or sea foam for tank....Keep on tender all winter or store in warm controlled room. Good luck and thanks for your service. Go 10th Mtn.
