Default Have to weld up reshoot counteshaft bore

Countershaft bearing went out and took out the bore for the bearing. Anyone have any tips on this?
I plan on having it welded up and either putting in a metal sleeve and boring that to size or going thru aluminum weld to size.

Zippers performance is telling me a sleeve is the way to go. My Welder is telling me welding wont be a problem

Also I have the original trap door to go off of for location and the aftermarket zippers trap door

Which would be better for locating?

Steel sleeve and bore that to size.

Getting a used case is also an option.

Used case is not an option. Everyone I have seen doesn't have the cam cover and then there is the cost of putting the crank in. No cam cover = line boring additional bores in the cam chest. And the only issue I have with a steel sleeve is then I have 2 bores to size in and keep parallel. Still needs to be welded up on the face and bore as well.

Thanks for your input

I thought you were talking about the transmission case.

I'd be dropping it all off at Hal's, & saying Fix It, call me when it's done! What exactly happened, what a mess? What year & model? Good Luck, BJ

1 Hal's machine shop is being reorganized and they cannot do a job like this
2 Hal's like all other dealers here in Wisconsin have a rule they will not work on a bike more than 10 years old.

I would never have Hals work on my bike. They charge 95 an hour and I do almost everything myself.

As to the bike it is a 1988 sportster hugger, The counterbore bearing went out and the countershaft took out the hole. This is most likely due to me breaking a countershaft over a year ago. I fixed the transmission, replaced the bearing but missed out on the hole being weakened, that is my theory anyways.

I have to split the case. Then have it welded up. I think what I am going to do is strive to shoot the bore in the welded case and if I cannot get it withing .0005 parallel and .001 location then I will enlarge the bore and try it again with a steel sleeve

I'm lazy.

I'd buy another Sportster for less than the time and money I'd have in the repair.
