Help with installing a used speedometer in a 2014 Electra
I recently purchased a 2014 Electra Glide Limited. The bike was missing the speedo/tach unit. I purchased a USED replacement unit and installed it. All works fine except the Odometer shows VINERR instead of the mileage from the bike. I understand that the mileage for the bike is stored in the ECM and that the speedometer reads it from there.
I took the bike to the local dealer (I live on an island so I only have one choice). The tech checked out the bike and could not determine how to remove the VINERR. The called their Harley tech line and they told them the bike must be ridden 35 miles without turning it off and then the speedometer will sync automatically.
I took the bike and rode over 45 miles that night. It did not work. Took the bike back the next day. They hooked it to the computer again, they called Harley again. The suggestion was to ride it further. Road the bike further that night, still showed VINERR.
Took the bike back again the next day. Now I have been told it is impossible to install a used speedometer into a bike because they cannot reassign the VIN # to it. They told me I would need to purchase a new speedometer.
Does anyone have any experience with this to know if it is true? If this is true, why did the Harley Tech line not tell them this on the first two calls? If it is not true, does anyone know how to successfully marry the speedo to the VIN?
I believe the 35 mile ride procedure is to marry a NEW speedo to a bike. Your used speedo is already married to another bike.
I replaced a speedo on a 2010 Ultra Classic with a used one (it had the same mileage) with no issues, but I was told that starting in 2012 the mileage was stored in the ECM.
No cannot, the speedo is married to the previous bike. This was introduced to prevent monkey business with the mileage for after sale bikes. There is 35 miles before it gets married, that's for a new Speedo meter.
