Greetings all. Just a noob question; just broke the bank on a 2016 SGS and can't afford any modifications at the moment. Is there really anything damaging to the engine just to leave it stock or should one at least change out the air cleaner say for a better one to help with the engine breathing. Dumb question, but can't spring for new pipes, etc. etc. Gotta go comfort here in Michigan, heated seat, gloves, and jacket. Thanks in advance. Sorry.....simie
Many leave their bike stock and are very happy with them yes while things like a high flow air cleaner, exhaust pipes, tuner, cams will "liven-up" the bike and make it run faster and cooler - run it stock if that is what makes you happy and smile every minute
Thank you for taking the time to respond gentlemen. And as soon as the 3 inches of snow goes away I'm riding. Hate the cold but I need to ride this bad boy.

I know many people that leave their bikes stock whether they can afford new mods or not, so don't worry, you'll be ok.
Save your dollars and ride it like it is. Air cleaner and pipes do not add that much to the power, just change the sound. Additionally if you add the air cleaner and pipes you have to buy a tuner, then it all goes down hill from there. If and when you resell the motorcycle any add-on will not really increase the value, they are just for you to make it your personal ride. Stock is good, enjoy your new ride.
We would suggest checking out an External Breather System. Your bike will run better and the external breather system will increase engine longevity, since engines much prefer cool, clean air.
For your stock air cleaner, you would have to use this system-
This is our DIY External Breather System. It requires drilling and tapping into the support arms coming off the back plate of the A/C.
Also, check out some Thunder Torque Inserts for your exhaust. They'll give you a gain in low and mid range torque as well as a deeper tone, a bit of a throatier growl, really giving your bike that loping Harley sound.
The TTIs are pretty nifty and inexpensive.
They are personally my favorite mod we offer. Best exhaust mod for sure when comparing results per dollar spent(29.95).

The only thing that really damages an engine is when you make modifications. You can give into the lizard that wants more performance but stock has been tested. I've got 155K on a stock 88 that has required very little service. Just regular maintenance that I have mostly done myself. Yeah I had to fix leaky valve seats at 128K but it's still stock.
