Dk beat me to it. If your happy stock stay stock. The only thing I think is a must, and its cheap, is an external head breather kit. From the factory there is a tube runing from the rocker boxes into the air cleaner. As your motor warms, cools, and is running there are fluctuations in the air preasure inside the motor. These vents let it breath. With it comes oil vapor. In the stock setup it goes into the air cleaned and does one of two things. 1) gets sucked into the motor and little by little creates nasty deposits all along the intake track right down to the valves. 2) dribbles a gooey oily mess down the side of your motor. If you do a basic search about the subject there are a lot of articles and videos showing what and how used oil going into your motor effects it. For as little as 15-20 dollars this can be avoided. Why didn't they come from the factory then you may ask..... EPA crap. You may get a drip or two of oil from the breather hose after a long ride.
Or you can go batshit crazy and change the whole bike. Or not. Ride Safe Wild Bill
No, he said he wants to use his bike, not turn it into a never-ride-except-once-a-month-if-the-weather-is-perfect-and-the-trailer-is-nearby-with-someone-inside-to-clean-it-instantly show queen.
I road my Road King for three years before I installed a Stage 1 kit. Prior to that, I spent on comfort items like better seat, heated gear, backrest, etc. And, I never paid full pop for any of these item. I waited until I found a part or accessory on sale or was in slightly used, near new condition. Be patient and and don't pay retail. Meantime, enjoy the bike.

The only thing that really damages an engine is when you make modifications. You can give into the lizard that wants more performance but stock has been tested. I've got 155K on a stock 88 that has required very little service. Just regular maintenance that I have mostly done myself. Yeah I had to fix leaky valve seats at 128K but it's still stock.
