Found an '05 Road King that has sat 3 years...outside under a leaky tarp. It is ate up. Dead battery. Jumped it from a car (yes, it was off) Bike started, but starter barely worked. Emptied tank, put in cocktail of Premium, Heat, Sea Foam, MMO...fired up, ran about 5 minutes....disconnected jumper....bike died. Everything is rusty. So now the quiz: starter barely turned, (wonk...wonk...wonk...sputter, sputter...wonk...wonk...wonk...fired up- stutter, sputter, sputter, sputter...high rpm. (Yeah). If bike died from jumper taken off, does that mean the stator is shot? If starter went wonk...wonk...wonk, is it shot? Is a bike that's been wettish for 3 years worth fixing? Is it pretty much, take the whole bike apart, clean and put back together? Oh...and the belt is brittle; tight, but brittle. What is a '05 Road King basket case worth? Lots of questions. Come on and share some of your greatness and experience as I consider saving this machine. Thanks
Difficult to know without actual detailed pictures.
Does bike have 12,000 miles or 120,000 miles.
Sounds like bike was forgotten.
It might present a value to a DIY type of person that was going to complete all work on the bike themselves.
It could be a money pit or a deal but it would require careful review.
On the surface it reads like it needs a major service, new tires, new bearings, new battery and a new belt to get close to being road ready.
That is about $1,000 in parts alone with out paying labor.
Then you need to look at cosmetics and even used parts can add-up quick.
Then you have possible cam shoe replacement $$.
Again it depends, a similar year model might be $7,000 in really nice show room condition.
I've seen good looking well cared for RK's around here for $6K so I'd have to get it pretty cheap. if you're planning a major build with a built engine an custom everything it might be a good find.
Good input. Sounds like something you have to "throw money at." I'm just a poor guy with a Harley. I don't have a shop. It was something to think about.
