Default Help with 72 Ironhead Right side shift forward controls

Do I need a puller or a press to take this apart? I need to move the levers around. 🤔

Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Well that doesn't look stock. On my 75 (not the same by any means but about the same vintage) the shift lever comes off pretty easy once you remove the pinch bolt. That one looks like it was pounded on. The shaft should be splined to prevent rotation. I would put one of those wheel/gear pullers on it and see if it will move without a whole lot of pressure on the screw. If it doesn't budge, try smacking it with a hammer. If that doesn't work, maybe a little heat.

You can also try reposting your question down in the ironhead section of this forum. There aren't too many there but the ones who will respond are pretty smart. If you still need help, go to sportster.net and post your question in their ironhead section. If they can't help, call a priest.

You can't change the position of the levers because the position of the levers is indexed by a keyway.

Very true!

72'Ironhead, can you post a photo of each side showing us more of what you're dealing with? Might help us better understand why you want to move the levers.

this is an after-market setup, not original
if you need to change rotation, looks like a new indexed arm is needed, not very hard to make.
the hd shift shaft is smooth so you maybe able to adjust position there.
