My 2000 Heritage Springer started out life with a 1450 ci motorcycle. It now has a six speed Screaming Eagle transmission, and a Screaming Eagle 1503(?) ci high compression engine with compression releases. I will be shopping for a replacement starter, The ads I see are primarily for the 1450 ci bikes, but nothing for my bike. Any recommendations?
With compression releases you shouldn't need a different starter! They reduce starting effort, to give your starter an easy life - in fact they are installed expressly for that. For a higher output starter you need to look aftermarket. I have a much bigger engine than stock in my Glide, so have a 2kW starter - just to be sure! All-***** is a well-known brand, but there are others. To improve starter performance, with your stock starter and especially if you buy a higher performance one, replace the main battery cables with aftermarket ones, to boost power at the starter.
Reaper's engine is 98ci (1600cc) @ 10.5:1 compression. I installed a 1.4 KW All ***** starter in her a few years ago. I can happily recommend it. The heads do have compression releases as well, but now and then I forget to push them in, and the starter has no problem cranking the engine over.
If you need a starter, pick up a 1.4kw from Jireh cycles, $136 for a black one.. Same as the others only cheaper.
Chances are the starter you have is still good. You'd be better off getting a better battery and 4 gauge cables.
I'm running an 11.3 to 1 116ci Dyna with a LI battery and 2 gauge cables. Not problem starting. AGM batteries were only lasting about 2 years. This one has gone 3 and still plenty of power.
Forgot: Stock starter. I've blown up a few starter clutches, one starter and ring gears when the AGM batteries got weak.
