What do you use to clean degrease aluminum inside engine case
Just like the title said. What do you use to clean degrease the inside of the aluminum engine case and cast aluminum engine parts? Can you safely use non clorinated brake cleaner on the inside of the aluminum engine case and any cast aluminum engine parts?
Use it all the time to clean bare aluminium & engine internals, watch it around some paints and anything plastic. It will change some blacked engine paints, give it a dull washed out look.
If it's just "petroleum varnish," then I'd try simple green. (Personally, I use Simple Orange [SO], as it's a lot stronger than SG.)
Use a parts cleaning brush to get into all the nooks and crannies. Rinse with water, then blow dry.
SO won't etch gasket surfaces either.
I'm looking to clean out and degrease a new stock oil pump and cam plate before assembly. Also looking to clean and degrease the cam chest and gasket surfaces.
Water in an inclosed engine is not a good idea, SG and a wash down while doing a complete tear down is another matter. Brake clean works fine.
Yeah I wouldn't think using any water based cleaner would work for my application. I was thinking along the line of a solvent based cleaner and I was wanting to know what is the best option.

I just wipe it out with a clean rag, I don't introduce any water or solvent into the crank area and contaminate the oil you are going to use to run the engine at start up. Oil's going to continue to drip and migrate to the cam chest so not going to get it dry clean anyway.
