I had degrading grips on a past bike, had a buddy who works in leather make me some leather grip covers. They were cheap, easy to install and looked great.
Something like this. Prevents replacing the grips completely.

Right up the street from me. Huh. My son may even have some laying around. Thin 'nuff, so that could be btr than the leather grips. If there is an issue when it is wet, I can take it off and put new stuff on or just go to the leather grip route.
