Yeah that orange filter with the hose stinks. Definitely doesn’t work like it’s showing that video posted above

Im starting to think it is inevitable that I am going to make a mess. My old sporty had a vertical filter. I guess that was just too simple.lol
Well you could go all out and get an oil filter relocation kit and that would fix your issue for sure. DK Customs has one that is really nice. I got their reusable Flow oil filter and installed it on my last oil change. Debating on whether to add the relocation kit or not.

One liter water bottle with the end and half the top cut out. Leave the cap on and slide it in under the oil filter. Unscrew it and let the oil and filter fall into it. I put a rag under the bottle to catch whatever might dribble out when I pull it away.

Slightly loosen the filter so you cam spin it with your hand, slide something under the filter, the orange thing, soda bottle or cardboard...then punch a hole a 6 oclock on the end of the filter and let it drain, When the oil stops dripping, remove the filter

I cut an oil bottle down to fit under the filter, just leaving a small portion of each side of the bottle. Slide it under the filter leaving the cap end pointed down to my catch. Only have to cut a bottle that way for about 2/3 of the bottle.

I used a cut bottle too, but some oil always spills ... Now I put two or three sheets of newspaper and give them the shape of the harley funnel, they hold just enough to remove the filter without spilling anything

Have/used HD h0rse$hit orange oil catch, add tin-foil (underneath) and crap-ton of shop rage - oil still gets all over. My plan = @DK Custom oil-filter relocation kit is getting ordered/added this winter.

I will add, after punching the hole at 6 o’clock, punch one at 12 o’clock to vent. Let it sit overnight or for a long period and then come back to it. I always strategically plan my oil drains this way leaving time for draining.

FWIW.
I have used a 2 liter soda bottle with the bottom cut off and some other trimming to fit and access.
Insert a socket extension through the cap hole to remove the oil filter with the socket.
Worked well enough to contain any oil mess.

But I prefer nice tools so I bought the $10 orange filters from e-bay as shown in post 8 above.
Yes, this e-bay one differs from the official HD one in shape.
I do not like the idea of punching a hole in the filter with a nail...I just don't like that idea.
Why a few co-member above say this funnel sucks I am unsure (just like a "gravity tray") but I notice on a dry test fit it is a tight diameter to the filter canister.

I will be doing an engine oil change today on a XL1200N.
I will attempt without punching holes - loosen, insert funnel, loosen to begin drain, remove.
If I remember, I will post a follow up.

Worst case - back to a soda bottle
