I just upgraded my 2010 fat boy to a 21 Street glide special.
ive seen online that you can get Apple car play by just flashing the whim on the computer and not really adding the whim components.
spoke with the HD dealer and they said this was no longer an option.
anyone know if this is true and you really have to the the wireless set up.
I neither need nor want the wireless microphones
Yes, it is true. Dealers no longer can flash the unit to enable ACP to work without the WIM.
There is a work around. There is a user that sells the "jumper" for $25 bucks. It suppose to work by bypassing the wireless requirement. I bought one. I just didn't install it yet.
I have a 19 Street Glide and when I brought my bike to the dealer last fall I asked them to do the Car Play flash that I had heard about. They connected to my bike and attempted a few different methods to enable Car Play, but in the end they determined that without a headset installed through the WHIM, Car Play won't work. According to them it's an Apple "safety" thing. Apple doesn't want you to take your hands off the bars to interact with Car Play, they only want you to use voice commands. So, the work-around is now disabled in the software.
So I purchased the jumper that maxxym mentions above and it works like a charm. To install you do need to remove the fairing to get to the WHIM connector, but you just plug it in and it works. This version of Car Play requires a USB cable connected to your phone to work, it does not work wirelessly.
My question now is, HD just released a new GTS update, will that somehow cause the jumper work-around not to work?
I'll be trying the update today and I'll report back.
I just upgraded the Boom GTS software to the newest version: MY21.20.28.00, and I can confirm that the Car Play jumper work-around still functions as expected.
I now have the newest software and I still have Car Play thanks to the jumper. I expected this to be the case, but you never know.
Here is my theory on why it works for some (the jumper): Apparently, if your GTS has been flashed for the WHIM, the jumper no longer works.
I have a 21 Triglide with the jumper installed and CarPlay works perfectly. I know for a fact my dealership did not flash the GTS for a WHIM.
And, not meaning to insult anyone, remember that CarPlay will not work if you plug your phone in before turning on the GTS. You must allow the GTS to boot and then plug in your phone.

Thanks for the feedback. Is there a way I could 'unflash' the GTS or re-install the original or can only a dealer do this?
