Your thoughts on adding set screws to handle bar clamp .
I just started installing a set of 1-1/4" , 12" mini apes on my bike . I got to thinking about whether or not I need to upgrade the clamp , so the bars don't slip .
Is there any reason I shouldn't drill and tap a couple set-screws in it , or should I just leave it alone ? I did have a set of 10" bars on before with no issues .
I had to pin a set of 16" apes that I put on my 02 Heritage Springer. Makes a world of difference. The bars don't budge. Only had to do one riser. The second is overkill.
see no need, never had a pair of proper bars slip. before i would add set screws which will mar the bars which makes changing position in the future a little more work removing the raised metal, i would add a wrap of crocus clothe with the grit to the bar side.
Go for it, if you have a big desire to WEAKEN your clamps.
Yah , I was wondering about that , which is why I posted , I wanted to know if anyone has done it , and how it worked for them . Appreciate your response .
The more I think about it , I will probably just end up installing the bars according to the manual , the front 2 bolts need to be torqued first before the rear , seems this helps fasten the bars down a little stronger instead of an even gap all around . Since I do all my own work , I'll just leave well enough alone , if I do have any slip , I'll buy a beefier clamp .
Does your bike you a two piece or one piece top clamp?
My '05 Roadie had a two piece, I bought a one piece, cheapo black one from J&P when I did a set of 12's. Something like $15, never moved. Plus it gives you a little more stability from racking. Good luck.

Good question , it's a one peace clamp , which is why I originally thought about the set screws instead of buying a new clamp , but like perk stated , it may weaken the clamp , they are definitely thinner than the aftermarket ones I've been seeing .
