Default Do I get in over my head?

A friend of mine has an 11’ xr1200x that had been in a front end collision. He says he doesn’t quite have the time to make the fix, so he’s trying to let it go. I’m new to the world of Harleys, so if anyone has any tips/advice here it would be greatly appreciated. He says only front end damage, aside from some scrapes on the exhaust and a mangled shift lever.

The primary damage from the pics being the struts, rim & tire along with the brake assembly, but I’m likely missing a few things. From the few pics posted, any concerns & maybe a rough parts cost for this kind of repair? My limited experience figures about 2-3k (Canadian), but like I said I’m new to the Harley world. Just wondering if this is the right opportunity to join the club.

Probably a tweaked frame. Forget about it.

The inverted front forks are probably 2 to 3 grand all by themselves. That's a salvage bike, at best.

Congrats on your first post to HDF, to the forum.

1. With that type of damage I would be concerned if the frame was tweaked. Look over welded areas and paint to see if any is wrinkled or blistered.
2. Was it reported to the insurance company and issued a salvage title?
3. Was it him who go into the front end collision or did he buy it salvage? If he bought it, you do not know the history and many things could be wrong with it.

Just the front left & right fork assy is going to cost $1,525 or so.
Triple trees with stem are not available, you will have to find used.
Headlamp, controls switches and handlebar will run about $2,000
Front wheel is not available, you will have to find used, about $200 - 800
Other misc stuff like bearings, seals washers etc going to run you $1,000 or so.

Bike at best is worth $4,500 if it has a salvage title - So yes you probably are in over your head if you have not done this type of work.

Good Luck

Yep, she is salvage. But don't run away just yet. Check the steering neck welds, triple tree, steering stops, down tubes and the front motor mounts. If they are good, front-end repair is probably in the zip code of $3K USD if you do the work. Actually, a fun project. Here are a couple I did recently. The Heritage need two fork assemblies. The Low Rider just needed two fork tubes. A shop manual and eBay will be your best friends.

Here's the damage done to my son's Iron when I guy blew thru a red light and hit him.

He bought the parts to fix it while waiting on the legal battle. He has about $4,000 in parts, and that was with the discount from New Castle Harley Davidson which you can't get anymore. He probably saved somewhere around a grand or so compared to full price on the parts. That was for a bike still in production.

I did all the repairs/installation of new parts which included lower triple clamp, bars, tank, rim, tire, brake rotor, brake line, mirrors, clutch cable, levers, fender, fork tubes, and one rear turn signal.

If the frame isn't tweeked fixing your bike is possible, but won't be cheap. Good luck if you decide to go with it.
