Hi All, I'm debating on getting one for my Street Glide, I have them in our two Cadillacs and I love the idea of them for so many reasons. This HD Forum is the KING of "Been there, done that, have the T-Shirt" I've leaned a lot from you all on many topics. I'd like to hear from those that have dash cams on their bikes. I have just started my Google searches and like this one and the price doesn't seem bad to me ($499): Vantrue F1 Motorcycle 4K Front and Rear Dash Cam, 4K + 1080P Motorcycle Camera, GPS, Full Body Waterproof, Wi-Fi, 160°Wide Angle, Starvis Night Vision, G-Sensor, Parking Mode, Support 512GB Max. Seems to be a couple of hours for the install, a nice winter garage project. Where did you mount cameras (I'm hoping someone here has mounted one on a SG having done all the homework already and can give me some advice etc.). Thanks in advance, mods I hope I posted in right area.
I can tell you that vantrue has decent dashcams. I have them in all my vehicles.
I was strongly considering this very model after I bought my bike, but I was spending money like a drunken sailor and needed to rein it in so I never pulled the trigger on it. That and I already had a Insta360 that I mounted on my handlebars to achieve a similar effect - be able to document what happened if I end up tangling with another vehicle - people in cars are dumbasses when you're in another car, but it's so much worse when you're on two wheels. I know this isn't news to anyone on the forum.
My son had my old dashcam in my '06 Jeep Commander when an *** in a pickup mis-judged his clearance when cutting him off at 70 MPH and clipped the steel front bumper on the Jeep. The guy then tried to run, but that Jeep had a V8 and my son kept up with him until he pulled over. The ******* state trooper didn't listen to my son and blamed him for the accident (21 year-old kid - must be his fault, right?) - my boy was too upset and didn't remember the camera until after the event. The insurance companies were very interested when they heard the whole story and got the dashcam footage proving the jerk in the pickup was not only completely at fault, but also tried to flee the scene.
I'm still thinking of going with it over the winter - maybe a Christmas present for myself. Though I share your curiosity of where and how to best mount the cameras. I have a Heritage Classic, not a SG, but I'd be interested in what you come up with if you go with it.
I'll tell where I mounted mine but I have an advantage alot of people don't have...the ability to make stuff out of metal...like nice little mounting brackets for little cameras lol. The rear I made a bracket that attached to the lower left license plate bolt and then used the wrap around strap that came with the system I bought. That took care of the back. For the front I just used two hose clamps...one around the camera and one around the bar that holds my spotlights. I just looped the one clamp through the other, clamping the camera and bar. I don't have pictures but I could post some tomorrow
I am interested! Please post pics of the install, and follow up with how you like its performance!
I would like to see more about it, and possibly get the system as well
I will do it in the spring (wife buying the dash cam for my birthday present) then I'll post how I did it and how it works/worked. I don't want to spend all the time doing it now in the winter and not being able to use it.
Just saw this thread and had to reply I have a 2018 VMax and installed the Vantrue F1 on it. Although I think the dashcam is probably abut the best you can get, there are a couple caveats to be aware of. One minor caveat is that the metal around the cameras is REALLY soft and scratches easily. The second caveat, and this one bothers me, is that the video will get garbled at times when connect to my iPhone 14 Pro. Its clearly a signal problem but its kind of a downer. I dont think it will record like that, but the fact that the signal gets garbled is troublesome. It doesnt happen all the time and only when I ride and am viewing the rear camera. The firmware is the latest version, so its something with the unit that should be addressed.
Anyway, I also have a 2019 Fat Boy 114 and am taking a trip to Key West in the spring/summer. I was thinking about installing the Vantrue F1 on it but have NO IDEA where to mount the cameras! I mounted the cameras on my VMax and it looks INCREDIBLE! I had people ask me if I bought the bike with it preinstalled!
I can tell you the Vantrue is awesome because it simply turns on when I start the bike. There is no setting up the camera and fussing with it. I literally get on my VMax and ride.
