Default Low Dyno Numbers?

Hi Guys,

I have a relatively new to me ‘09 ultra classic. VIN reads it was a 96”, but is decked out in 103 emblems and when taking bore scope threw the spark plug holes saw the piston dome part number was that from the SE twin cam 96 to 103 conversion kit (along with the AC).

Anyway, I removed the SE cams and installed woods 222 cams and a road shark 2-1 exhaust along with new lifters, pushrods etc.

Got it dyno’d and was a bit surprised that only showed a max hp of 83 and 103 torque.

Doesn’t this seem low? What are your guys thoughts?

Just trying to figure out if I expected too much or it’s a tune/HW issue?

Thanks

It does sound a little on the low side. If it feels good riding it, maybe it's not worth chasing numbers unless you have the $$ and time to do that. Two things that can be contributing to lower numbers, maybe the exhaust isn't up to making more power. I know nothing about the exhaust you have. But it could be as simple as the exhaust is the culprit. You don't mention what tuner hardware / software was used. Top of the line is TTS and Power Vision. If an HD tuner was used, or a V&H unit, you can expect a little less as they're not as full featured as TTS and PV. And also the shop who tuned it may not be all that experienced. Below are two dyno sheets a stock 96" with cams, and a stock 103" with cams.

The first one is my 2009 Ultra that I put Andrews 48 cams, D&D exhaust and SE airbreather and got great results. This is a bone stock 96" motor except for what I listed above.

The second one is a 2012 Road King that I upgraded cams, Andrews 48's again, D&D exhaust and SE airbreather. Otherwise a bone stock 103" motor. Different shop this time, and it also made good numbers. Almost identical results but a bit more from the 103" bike.

2009 Ultra 96"

2012 Road King 103"

I forgot to mentioned it was a techno research tune. Seems to have a lot of decel pop when letting off on the throttle too - pretty annoying when it seems almost every-time i let off TBH.

I don’t really care about numbers that much but was surprised, I was expecting atleast 90hp and it does feel like it’s missing something in how it pulls compared to before - so I unfortunately wouldn't say im completely satisfied with how it rides.

My thoughts were also between the 2-1 exhaust and that maybe the tuner is less experienced or more conservative.

Hey, I see your dino sheet says roeder racing monroeville ohio.

Ii’ve been on their dyno waitlist for a few months (went somewhere else while waiting) but have been thinking about still having them give it a shot.

I was going to have them use my powervision.

Techno Research is a decent tuner platform. They're currently not available in the US, or offering tuning licenses. And they're going under some changes to enter the US market again. https://madladsolutions.com/

Decel pop can be handled two ways in the tuning software. Add some timing advance to the closed throttle spark table within the operating temperature cells. And also by adjusting the AFR in the table. And also there is a third way, add some fuel in the main AFR tables below idle speed.

Closed Throttle Spark Table

And this is the Decel Enleanment Table

Roeder does great work. They're about four hours from me. The second shop for the 103" motor is Hawg Werks LC in Dayton Ohio. Nate is an experienced tuner, and also does great work.

Not apples-to-apples of course but when my '17 103" was running CR-570II cams with a Thunderheader and high flow AC I saw 81/103 with a FuelMoto tune. To me, it sounds like you're right in the ballpark.

Does seem low. Should shoot for about 1.2 hp per cubic inch

Roeder are some great guys to work with. George Roeder is an honest man who runs an honest shop.

OD's is closed and out of business.
