Default Risers - How tight?

Being fairly new to Harley style bikes, I am curious about the risers and how tight to crank those bolts. I have rubber inserts in the tree where the bolt goes through and there are fancy chrome caps on both sides of the tree. If you tighten the bolts all the way, the rubber is compressed so much it goes back to metal-to-metal and the vibration in the grips is horrible.

Am I right in assuming that you tighten them up just enough so the bars don't wobble too much?

I always replace the rubber inserts with urethane inserts. They still dampen the vibrations, but give a firmer feel. I generally tighten 'em as tight as I can with a 1/2 inch drive ratchet, using a grade 8 bolt.

The inserts that I have must be much softer. It bottoms out way before 25 ft pounds. I have blue loctite on the threads. I tightened them up until the lock washers were flat, then backed off 1 full turn. Most of the vibration has gone away and they fell pretty tight.

Well the urathane are a option but on some bikes if solid mount they buzz, you can remove the steel insert and machine it down a bit to get it tight or replace with new rubber ones. Try a duece they have no riser bushings!!!
