I'm a newbie rider and I have a problem with my 97 883 sportster XLH I just purchased 2 weeks ago. After riding for about 15 - 20, it still won't run with the choke all the way in. I replaced the spark plugs which were black and that helped a little but did not fix the problem. Mods are Vance & Hines drag pipes, Screamin Eagle wires and coil (not sure how old the wires and coil are). Carb is also jetted. bike has 18k miles. Thanks in advance for your help!
4 things would be common problems by the symptoms you described;
1. Loose main jet or holder (check idle jet too)
2. bad float adjustment or needle valve
3. Bad accelerator pumpcheck valve(or pump diaphram itself) letting fuel constantly feed through the squiter jet.
4. Hole in throttle slide diaphram
One more thing - not common - the choke valve inside the carb (not the cable) could be sticking and not shutting all the way. That would flood the engine and keep vacuum the port open enough to cause a major leak at the same time. First CV I ever touched had that prob and it about drove me nuts since I had no knowledge of that type carb.
Whatever it is, doesn't sound like anything major and doubtful it's the ignition. Good luck
