I am considering investing in a spray gun set up to do basic paint work. Nothing exotic right now, just single color set ups. I just want some advice on spray-guns etc... I'm looking for something reasonably priced thats not a peace of junk. What other equipment would I need to set this up? I currently have a 26gal 165 Max PSI compressor, bead blaster, and an empty shed.
I have no painting experience, but I had thought that maybe I would set up a small home shop to do a little hobby painting. Then I read How to paint your motorcycle by JoAnn Bortles. I had no idea how much equipment was really necessary. I am no longer considering such a set up. It might be worth checking out; even if you decide to go through with it, it looked like there were a lot of good tips in it.
I second that to what cbbrown says also. JoAnn Bortles book is super.
I have a copy as I paint for a hobby. Many tricks in it too. Also
Pamela Shanteau has some great books out also. I am custom Paint book poor. Try some at the book sites used as they are pricey sometimes.
As for a spray gun, a decent gravity feed gun will be cool. No need to spend hundreads of dollars. I believe Sharpe makes a nice one for around 100 or so. When you start painting get breathing protection.
One word................Buying paint gets real pricey. For my stuff I like to use the waterbase AutoAir. Then have a shop blow the clear on.
I wanna see some of your stuff. Sounds cool.
lots of guns out there to spray with... use a Sharpe trim gun for small stuff. I shoot a lot of urethane so a good fan and an air mask or hood would be a good investment!! Throw away surgical gloves, mixing containers and strainers you will need too! Have a Badger air brush and the spray gun I use I will have to look don't remember the name of it off the top of my head! Just finished this fender up for my rigid House of Color Kobalt blue with a silver metallic base. Paint is pricey!
And then Practice some more.
I have about 10,000 hours of actual spray time under my belt and I will tell you that it takes a lot of patience and practice.
