Default need torque help quick

sorry guys, need a quick response. re: 98 FXD. just had a new tire put on the bike and i reinstalled the rear wheel. i understand the rear axle should have a torque of 55 to 65 ft lbs (per local dealer). i don't have a torque wrench and my neighbor, witht he same bike, said to just crank it down. should i get the torque wrench? is there a bearing load index that needs to be accounted for. will i freeze up my wheel or damage my bearing by over torquing?

thanks a lot
dan

I'm not tryin to be a wise *** but, Ive got an old shovel FLH and I've never torqued my axles. the best i can tell you is if you have a good feel for tight then let 'er fly, if not please use a torque wrench[sm=smiley20.gif]

You've got more than 55-65 pounds on her...if'n you didn't snap the head (and you obviously didn't) your probably good, 'till you try to take it off again! Then you'll be gruntin' the other way...

If you do a lot of the work on your ride yourself, get 2 torque wrenches; one that torques in ft/lbs and one in in/lbs.

I thought that a torque wrench was not necessary at one time when I was young and knew everything,As I got less intelligent (older) I found that they have them for a damn good reason,You should have two as the man said. ( I don't mean *****)

i own or owned nice torque wrench. but i can't find it. think it might have found its way out of my garage, have ahd some tools go missing. the look is kind of easy to jimmy. don't worry. i replaced the lock as soon as i brought the harley home.

thanks all. rode it last night. no problems. now for the front tire.

I like to do all of my own service and have found that I need 4 overlapping torque wrenches. I start at 20 inchpounds (1/4") and end up at 150 ft pnds (1/2"). Craftsman seem to be OK for the larger sizes (around $70 each), but, my 1/4" is a Snap-On - a bit more $$. If you do your own service, the investment pays for itself very quickly - and, you don't pull the threads on these alloy engine parts - easy to do, btw.
