Couldn't find any better spot for my question than here. Move if necessary.
Every day at the same time a program of some sort is running on my computer. All of a sudden for about an hour my internet speed drops to about dial up speed.
I have Windows XP with Charter internet. Nothing shows on the task bar that shouldn't be there during this time. There's nothing in my scheduled tasks that conflicts.
I've turned off all automatic updates and my securty/firewall briefly.
It doesn't make any difference which website I'm on.
Any ideas where to check?
Thanks
Control, alt, delete. then look in processes look for the one using the most memory. right click end task. see if that helps you can also see from there any programs u did not install.

I should have mentioned that I did that. Only thing running shown is my browser and email.
Thanks, tho.
Are you using a router? Is it wireless? Is it secure? Is someone else using it that you don't know?
Is Charter Internet a cable service? If so it could just be a lot of people in your area getting on at the same time going through the same hub. Does it happen at the same time every day? What time?
Thanks to those that replied. I'll know for sure tomorrow morning when the issue usually pops up. There was a program FSSM32.exe that took up alot of resources. Found it in the task manager .
Turns out it is part of my anti-virus. I had the scan starting at 7am and usually got back on the computer around 9. Found out the scan can take several hours.
I don't leave the computer on at night so found a more convenient time for it to run.
Think we got it. Thanks again.

If it is your anti-virus, start the scan just before shutting the computer down at night. Most anti-virus programs have a feature that you can turn on for an automatic shut down when the scan is finished.

Let me just say, Charter isn't exactly the best ISP. I experience the same issues along with others. I must admit, in all my years of experience with Charter, they will lead you to believe they are the best provider on the planet, bar none! When you call about issues, they NEVER admit they have any issues on their end! They always say their signal to your modem is excellent and above it's service to you. I always have to laugh, I called them once, just to prove this point to the wife. I disconnected the Modem for over 1/2 hour, called Charter and they said they saw no issues with connections and stated the signal to my Modem was well above average in my service area. I had a good laugh.
