I am considering putting a Harley Factory 103B in my softtail, however the dealer claims I will be happier with them rebuilding the 88B due to emissions on factory engine. Price is a little higher on rebuild. Any thoughts on which way to go?
I believe the happier would be the dealer with your money. Go with the factory engine. The factory engine builders don't just wear a Harley Service Tech's shirt...
These engines are being eyed by the EPA just as lawnmower (and etc) engines are. The problem is, the EPA will impliment enough 'emmission' restrictions on an engine to make it run like crap with no respectable power output. The valve events are modified, the ignition timing is changed, the engine is almost made to burn its own exhaust a few more times to 'make it clean'. The government can bury nuclear waste or drop it in the ocean but a citizen (subject) can't let a fart without a carbon filter and air rebreather. Yea, breathe your farts back again, that will make that ***** standing next to you so much more comfortable.
The factory engines, unless destined for California are clean and basically stock as yet.

I do not believe the factory will use the B model for the upgrade to 103...
Yea i have heard all kinds of crazy crap they are going to make harley do like make all of them EFI and require all of them to be liquid cooled in the near future. I dont want no damn radiator on my harley. Ill just keep rebuilding mine.
When you get the factory made 103 you only have to worry about the local guy installing it right, not building it. Plus now you have a brand new 88 motor sitting around that you can sell to re-coup some of your costs. Thats something right there to think about.
The dealer is filling you with[sm=bs.gif]. He is out of his mind. Why would you pay more for a rebuild when you can get a zero time engine for less. Sounds like the dealer is[sm=lame.gif]. Go for the factory engine !!!
And just how does Clem have specific knowledge of the nuclear dumping proceedures of the US Government. I vant to know ze truth......How does he know this????
