Default Starter Rebuild

Howdy all. My father passed away a few years ago, and theres been legal battles over things, but I've managed to salvage his motorcycle from the hounds. Its an 86 FXSTC softail. Its in some rough shape, as its been sitting at someone elses house for those few years while we fought to get it back. But I've been pecking away at it since, and its about ready for the road again. Needs some new tires and I'd like to get a new rear fender, as the one on there now has a hole rotted in it, under the seat. Right now the biggest concern I have with it is the starter. It needs a new one. I recently met someone who was replacing they're starter on their 98 FXSTC softail, and he gave me his old one (doesn't work). But I was wondering if anyone knows if that one will be an exceptable replacement for mine, and also, if anyone had an article on rebuilding a starter. Or should I just buy a new one? I like doing things myself, so I'd like to rebuild it preferably. Thanks in advance!

-Colin
