I've got a "94 Electra-Glide and have put close to 8000 miles on a Dunlop rear tire that I purchased last year. It's pretty much worn out. Is this normal or should I expect to get much more mileage out of a rear tire?
I'm easy on the bike and don't do quick starts. Most riding was done locally.
Thanks
I got 16000 miles on my OEM rear Dunlop. The front currently has 21000 miles on it with a lot of tread left. I ride single about 98% of the time. I could have gotten more out of the rear, but I was leaving on a 3000 mile trip and didn't want to chance it.
No that's not the norm, at least for me. 8k is what you'd expect for someone with a sidecar. I usually get 16k-18k on a rear Dunlop, front will go an easy 20+k. But I normally just replace them both at the same time anyway, gives me a chance to repack the wheel bearings front and rear. I ride about half and half solo/two up so I keep the rear pressure at 40 psi all the time. I tip the scale at around 240 and the wife's at 130.
Road surface conditions, temperature, inflation, and alignment will contribute significantly to the "how long" of tire wear. I just replaced a Dunlop K491 on the rear of my Sloptail with 13,200 miles on it. That's pretty good for my riding style, local road surfaces, and the sometimes lackadaisical way I (don't) check my tire pressure.
I agree that it sounds low on the milage. There are a lot of things to consider. The type of roads in your area and the surface. Weight on the bike, or more specifically passenger. Could have got a bad tire. It happens like any other product your tire was a badly made one that slipped through.
I just replaced the rear tire on my 06 Flhtcui @ 9400 miles.... Still had some tread, but it was getting kinda skinny. I ride in a very hot climate and 99% of the time I have my wife behind me.... Changing the tire made the bike feel about an inch taller..... probably cuz it was ~smiles~
I just replaced my front Dunlop HD at about 13000 miles. It was getting close to the indicators. My rear Dunlop HD still has good tread. Im not sure why, but this seems to be just opposite wear from some of the threads Ive been reading. I would think that the rear would wear sooner than the front. Humm. [sm=confused06.gif]
