Default Starter jackshaft

I'm putting my 2001 FLHR back together after a drive belt replacement and have a question about the starter jackshaft. I think I've gotten the parts oriented like they came off, but I can't remember exactly. I also think it's like the figure in the shop manual.

Do the squared off splines sit in the coupling or do they only mate with the coupling during the start cycle? Any other tips or comments appreciated.

Go by the diagram in the service manual, otherwise it won't engage.

Good idea, Mike.

I took apart what I had started and found the coupling was reversed between the jackshaft and the pinion gear. All back together now and the test ride last night was successful, but a little cold.

Thanks for the tip.
