Question Chrome flaking off

I have some chrome flaking off the Rocker box or the top of the head piece. Do they make a cover for this or should I just replace it? Can I do this without taking the engine out? I also have some flaking on the push rods and tappet covers. Any suggestion would be appreciated. 2001 FLHTC

Thanks

I don't know of any covers, but yes, you can take the rocker boxes off without disturbing the engine. Changing the push rod tubes and tappet blocks involves disturbing the push rods themselves. You could replace all those things in one go, as removing the rocker boxes gives you access to the rockers, and lifting them lets you get to the push rods, tubes and the tappet blocks.

I recommend you look at or buy a factory service manual, which will spell things out for you.

If you decided to replace the pushrod and tappet covers, here's a decent video cam replacement that also shows pushrod removal.
