hey everybody....i am new to motorcycles in general and just got a used 2005 sportster 1200......it came with a hd key fob(big circular one).....it looked to me like a clicker for an alarm....i brought it to the dealer(not where i bought it-got it on cl)......they said it was a switch to kill the ignition?.....they said your blinkers should flash.......i had them install a new battery in it for me.....i am actually scared to try it on my bike.....i don't wanna mess anything p on it electronically......
also why would u want that?.....so u park your bike and click the fob....and it killls the ignition....cant someone just wheel your bike away regardless?.....what is it intended for?......thanks for what is probably a very stupid question.....ryan

It is part of the security system.
What it actually does is disable the ignition so the bike cannot be started- just like in your car. It does not turn the bike off.
On the newer ones, the key fob works via proximity sensors instead of a clicker. Same **** different day.
Can someone walk off with your bike? Sure - even if the forks are locked they can still throw it in the bed of a truck. Will they? Probably not - no offense but its a 7 year old Sporty - its not going anywhere.
Bikes are easier to steal than cars, yes, but on the other hand, there are far fewer people who use them. Hence, not much of a theft risk.
so if u enable it with the fob it won't start with a key till it is clicked off?.....am i understanding u right?.....i wasn't necessarily really concerned with theft ....more of a case of wondering what the heck it did and if it was useful to me....i appreciate the reply....ryan
