I did a bit of research and found that youre not the only one who are concerned of the volume of the Vance and Hines mufflers. What I found is that Vance and Hines do offer optional quiet baffles for some of their products so you could look at that option. The stock mufflers I read can be opened up as well to provide the volume your 103" needs. Apparently the stock mufflers have 2 restriction openings. One on the inlet and one on the outlet. Someone suggested a barbell and smash them out.... I think I would try a holesaw?? And start with the inlet and test drive.
These new fangled bikes are all computer controlled unlike my old shovel. My # one option would be to put the original mufflers on and have a dealership tune the bike. It was tuned for the vance and Hines exhaust and needs to be tuned for the corks "stockers".
Hope that helps brother. Noticed that there were no replies and I know how frustrating it his when you need an answer.

Hey Guys; I'm new to modifying my '99 Ultra, and I'm trying to get more sound out of my stock mufflers. (It is always quiet around my riding buddies Harleys). So Crush, where did you come across the info on the stock mufflers have two restriction openings? I do see the one when looking into the back end of the muffler (that plate has one hole drilled into it). I'd like to modify my stock ones just to give me a little more sound. By doing this, will I need to modify the air cleaner or ?? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The info I got from the Internet. The two could be correct or incorrect depending on the year of the bike or the reliability of my internet source. As I mentioned, I ride an old shovel and a bit different than the modern scoots. I would say that performance can be improved by increasing exhaust volume and air/fuel intake. After all a motor is just like a pump. The modern Harley engine is kinna cool for hotrodding. Do your exhaust, aircleaner then take it to your dealership and they tune the computer to compensate the additional volume. Vollia a stage one kit!??
Something like that anyway.....

Thanks for the info; I know that any info from the world wide interweb is up to you to believe or not. I was just looking to do some basic mods that the computer would be able to adjust w/o dealer involvement. Time to do some digging on the web.

The new bikes run pretty lean and any adjustment to the flow should be checked to ensure proper air to fuel mixture. It would be a drag to burn a valve or piston. To open up a hole in the baffle wouldn't likely make any difference, I think I would check it out anyways.

Unfortunetly for me, my '99 Ultra with EFI has no "standard settings" that our local dealer is able to compare to if I modify the baffles on the exhaust and the air intake. They said if anything, they would be able to put it on their dyno and check the fuel/air mixture. According to them, with the type of EFI system in my ride, they stongly suggested, if it is running well, don't mess with it. So at this point, thanks for the input and I will just leave well enough alone. Time to hit the pavement.
