Default Muffler help needed

Hi all, About a year ago I bought a 2006 FLHTCUI with about 40,000 miles on her. As the bike had been somewhat abused I set about giving her some TLC and put my first ride on her about a week ago. As I live in the foothills of the Rockies I was able to take advantage of the twisty roads and put about 400 miles under the tyres in the day. My problem started when I got home and settled down for the evening. My ears didn't stop ringing for about 3 hours afterwards and I had a Serious headache.

The bike has a pair of Screaming Eagle mufflers on and they are way too loud for me. I'm remembering back to 1999 when I lived in the UK. I'd just bought a new Ultra Classic and wanted to change out the stock mufflers for something that would allow the engine to breathe a little better without drowning out my stereo. I spoke to a guy at HD. UK who suggested I try a particular HD Part# mufflers as "these were the mufflers that the Boston Police use on their Harley's and are good for power and not crazy loud"

I took his advice and the mufflers worked out great. I put ALOT of miles on that bike and enjoyed every second of it.

What I would like from you guys are some suggestions if possible as to what Mufflers I need to get that will still let my bike breath AND not leave my ears ringing.

Thanks

DaveD

I have vance & hines twin slash oval mufflers and don't have any drone at all. I've never had a problem with my ears ringing. I have actually thought about getting some different mufflers so I can have some more rumble.

I have Khrome Werks HP-Plus 3.5" Touring mufflers and like them. I have an 88" motor, like you, and they are much quieter than the straight through mufflers I had before. The bike runs as good or better than ever.

Now matter what you switch to, you should be wearing ear plugs. We use No Noise plugs because they still allow us to use our comm headsets.

Wind noise, engine noise, road noise and exhaust all add up to really damaging levels, even with stock pipes

OP, you are going to get a lot of different opinions. Exhaust sound is like seat comfort, it's hard to find two people that agree on it, and everyone has a different opinion.

I know as I have aged I want quieter exhaust. I stick to the Supertrapp mufflers nowadays. You can change end caps and or discs and adjust the sound level to your liking. And they flow just fine.

Thanks for all your replies, guys. If I can I would prefer to find a pair of the mufflers I had on my '99 glide. Anyone know what the Cops use.

There are often the HD FatShotz on Kijiji up here. Gasoline Alley HD in Red Deer was putting them on used bikes and a lot of people wanted complete systems to get rid of the cat in the newer 103s. You can still find them occasionally and they are a good deal. If they are too loud, you can put a solid end plate on them and adjust the number of disks for sound. On mine with the true duals and the FatShotz as HD ships them, the sound is nice while cruising and louder when the engine works. I personally love it and if you need it quieter they are tunable for sound. These are almost identical to the SuperTrapp FatShots with an open end cap and 8 disks. I paid $275 here in Calgary and they were like new.
