Hey all, so I'm rebuilding an old S.U. carb and I can't seem to separate the intake manifold from the carb body. I've got all of the fasteners out but the gasket seems to have "glued" the two pieces together. I sprayed WD40 on the area and tried to remove the manifold again (even with a rubber mallet) with no success. What do I do? Thanks for your help, Charlie.
The gasket may be paper and has set hard with heat, something they are prone to do. They can be the very devil to part. Modern gaskets tend to be made of more user friendly stuff. The only help I can offer (from across the Atlantic!) is to keep worrying it, like a dog!
Unfortunately the carb body is not very strong and the manifold may not be much stronger, so there are limits to how brutal you can be. Repeated tapping with your mallet may eventually budge it. A little heat such as hot water, dipping say the manifold only into it, may give you a chance, with differential expansion.
You're going to have to use some evil cunning and patience! Best of luck and let us know how you get on.
