Starter Problems
I have a 2007 Ultra Classic that I purchased new. I have 54,000 miles and I am on my 3rd starter. I always start the bike in neutral and the bike has been well taken care of. No mechanic has been able to explain why I'm going through these starters. I have been riding for 30 years and have had many Harleys. I ride with a lot of old school guys who can't figure it out either.
Does anyone have any ideas on this? Also, I haven't purchased a new starter yet. Should I go stock or is there some high performance starter that will last, that someone can recommend?
The only thing I can think of is that some part of the system must be misaligned.
With the primary cover off, sengage the starter by hand to see if the stater gear bottoms on the ring gear. Ther should be some clearance. Replace primary cover, watching for how easy the stater gear end mates back into the cover. The cover will move a few >000's, so install it where there is the least resistance.
Primary chains set too tight can cause issues with drag, especially when hot.
I now use an ALL ***** Racing 1.6 starter to crank my S&S T124, have for 5 yrs, far more power and effecient IMO. FWIW Fastrider124
