Had the HD family not taken it back at the time HD would have gone away or just became a foreign brand name. If it had not been for the EVO engine even after buying it back HD would have failed. It was done for and raised from the dead.
AMF had drained every last dime out of HD it could.
The EVO engine while no great power house stock is fun to ride.

The HD family did not "Take it back"....Vaughn Beals and and Willie G. were instrumental in the formation of a private investor group tha bought back the company....No Davidsons were involved.
I agree that Harley was done for....and that it was "raised from the dead".
No foreign company wanted it....
AMF poured many, many millions INTO Harley-Davidson....They didn't really ever get much of a return on their investment.
The easiest engine to make fast that they ever built....Much better heads stock than the Twin Cams have.
I have Twin Cam motors in a couple of my bikes....They are very fast now, They were turds when I first got them.
I took far more work to make them fast than an EVO motor, which could be made MUCH quicker with the simple change of the cam and the carb.
About 2 hours worth of work at home.
