Default What does EVO stand for?

Hi, this may sound like a dumb question but please forgive me. A long, long time ago someone told me that EVO stands for Eight-Valves-Overhead, and that Harley Davidson used that basis for the Evolution name on their engines. I always assumed that was true and I never really thoughtabout it, until today, when a friend told me that it was incorrect. He said that Harley named the engine Evolution and EVO is just short for that.

Does anyone have real knowledge about this? Please let me know.

Thank you
Victor

The motor was called the "Evolution"....We shortened it EVO.

It really is that simple.

Agreed.....no hidden meanings.
Nickname EVO is just short for Evolution.
Don't believe it stands for anything other than that.

How did you get past the "eight valves" part?

Evolution and EVO is just short for that. It was the EVO engine that brought HD back from almost near dead. The became the greasiest sales recovery in history.
A time when you could buy a new HD and sell it twice before taking delivery. When used ones some times brought higher than new prices.
EVO stand for rebirth and new life of HD. I kept one of my EVO's and will for life .
1996 FB. It has been number two in the stall for some time now but is still ridden and enjoyed. Not much different now than the week after it got home

It might have been a reference to the (Long Dead) Nova project that Harley-Davidson was working on in the late 70's'
The FXR line of bikes evolved directly out of that project when the Nova motor was shelved.

Not really....

The motor was dubbed the "Evolution" because it was an evolution of the existing motor. (It was essentially a Shovel lower end with greatly improved top end)
It was under development during the AMF years and was the most viable design for them to go to when the investor group bought Harley-Davidson back.

Contrary to popular belief....AMF was the best thing that ever happened to Harley-Davidson, because without the influx of cash from AMF, Harley-Davidson would have died around 1970.

Harley-Davidson at the time was it's own worst enemy.

The poor Quality issues that plagued Harley-Davidson during the AMF years were due to the motor companies pre-existing archaic manufacturing processes and **** poor quality control.

This is a very condensed version of the story....Because I'm far too lazy to post the whole thing in detail.

E = Extra
V = Virgin
O = Olive Oil

It's back when HD ran Italian oil in their motors...

JK, as others indicate = nothing more than a motor "generation" swap to market their change(s).
