Hi all
I have a 2005 xl1200c. new battery, new negative cable, terminal and ground nut are tight. some times it wont start up and today it lost power a few minutes after I took off. it seems that when I lose power if I put a socket on the negative ground stud to see if it came loose it will get power again.
any thought?
thx.
mike
Some connection is loose/corroded.
Corrosion is your enemy.
Doesn't take much........
Sometimes hard to spot.
Looks clean but it's not.
Even if tight but dirty not good...
Loose connection is just as bad.
Will carry voltage but not amperage.
Clean every connection, apply corrosion inhibitor, tighten good but don't strip threads.
Torque wrench not necessary, just use common sense.

Dismantle and inspect that stud closely. As Bill suggests it could be corroded or not making a good connection in some way. If you have a multimeter check resistance across that connector, you may find it changes when you put your socket on it, or waggle the cable.
