Default 2011 Ohio Ride to ?????

Last year we had the 2010 Ride to the Hills.

Recently I read about the National Road running from WV all the way to Indiana. This year is the bicentennial of the turning of the first spade of the roads beginnings. It was "the beginning of the 'road to build a nation' started in 1811.

Most of the old road is still intact. It's now called US 40 and begins in Wheeling and runs to just past New Paris with Columbus nearly in the middle. There are still some of the original buildings standing and some of the old bridges still being used.

Last year some members had long rides to get to the start of our ride, and long rides back.

I was thinking........what if we rode US 40 for our 2011 National Road Bicentennial Ride. Those nearer the east side of the state could start there on US 40 and ride to the center point-Columbus, and those nearer the east side of the state could beging at the Ohio and ride to Columbus. We could meet somewhere in C-town for burgers and brewski's or something like that. Rides from each side, to Columbus, would be around 106 miles or so. Those wanting to could then continue to the other side of the state if they wanted, and those who didn't could just boogie on home.

Anyway its just an idea. Pretty straight forward, but just an idea to get the ball rolling. I was reading about the road and thought it'd be a cool ride, and starting at each side of the state makes things more even for everyone.

Whatta ya'll think?

We picked June 19th last year. This year I'll be gone from June 10 until near July 4th but if we can do it any other time I am game.

Either way I am riding US 40. I love history, love riding and think it'd be pretty memorable.

I'm game for the ride Glide.... I live in Gahanna and rode through Buckeye Lake, Logan area with Ken (08fxd) last year. I may have even met you, but I'm not sure. I've been here since Oct. of last year and looking forward to some rides this year.

I drove US 40 a bunch over the summer for work. It is a great road for a bike ride for sure. It basically parrallels interstate 70. I would love to ride it on my bike instead of the dump truck I drove it on all summer.

The shop I worked out of was actually on US 40 and state route 202. I will have to wait until a date is set before I can commit to the ride.

For the most part in the eastern portion of the state, 40 and I-70 are one and the same. Till you get to Old Washington, then Old 40 peels off north of the interstate. For those approaching from the east, about 3 mikes west of Cambridge is a place called the Bears Den. They are open for lunch on Friday and Saturday and we eat there every week. If you can hold off a little longer the next best place is at the intersection of 40 and State Route 13 at Jacksontown, The Jacktown Pub. IMHO THE BEST Philly cheese steak around. VERY biker friendly. You should see the owners OSU theme bike, quite the bueaty. Our annual ride is planned for the last week in June and we'll return, like Mike, the weekend of the 4th. We had a great time last year and I see no reason why this year shouldn't be better. Mike, I can't remember your city of residence.

'Roundtown'....Circleville....hehehe.....also affectionately referred to as 'Pumpkinville' by some around these parts.

I mapped (yep, love mapping rides) and found starting at the river by Wheeling there are some good stretches of the 'National Road', US 40, but it does intertwine with I-70 here and there. Thats the side I am going to ride. Its about 2 1/2 hrs for me to get there (east side) from here. Shoot over on the super slab, 2 lane it back to Columbus. Coming from the Ind side there are longer shots of the road according to the map. Its a bit longer for me to get there plus I have never ridden the east side of the state before. I'm hoping to get my wife to ride along with me on her bike.

We're splitting on the 10th of June. Unless gas goes over $5 per gallon....that will make us re evaluate any long rides...

Supposedly...."every township on the National Road doubled its population every decade for 50 years".....sounds like a road with profound historical relevance to our country and Ohios growth.~cool

Bears Den is a great palce to eat. The only real problem for some is the gravel driveway.

As for 40 I have rode it from Springfield to Belmont, it aint bad but I would not call it scenic some parts are ok. Basically it is flat straight, with that said we usually hit the Bears Den at least once a month during the summer. J

This group put together some great rides last year. I made the Jimbo’s ride now that was some great riding and roads.

Talk about gravel driveways, that one at JimBo's can be a trick to surmount for many a rider. My wife won't even try it....lol....instead wanting to parkl across the road.
