Default MN State HOG Rally

Just wondering who else plans on attending the Rally this year in Duluth?

Wife and I along with another couple plan on heading up there on Wensday so we can have a day to hit the north shore...

I went last year in Rochester. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed so do not think I will be attending another one.

sure does.......we went to the last one there and it was awesome. The ride along the north shore to Canada is beautiful, and taking a attitude adjustment break at the top of gooseberry falls is one hell of a rush. We'd like to make it up there this year also, but with our annual Esox hunting trip to the UP of Michigan the following week, it don't look good.

I was gonna try make Duluth this year, mainly to hit the north shore. I would like to hear more about the area, places to stay and see, from someone that's been there.

Any riding in and around Duluth is great. Where to stay depends on you and when you are going.
Great hotels up by Two Harbors along the lake, I think Superior Shores is the one my wife and I go to when we go back up ever year since we moved away. The Holiday Inn and Raddison in Duluth have parking ramps that are a good safe place to leave the bike. If you are into camping Jay Cooke State Park is one of the best places I've been.
As far as rides, up to Thunder Bay, up to MN Hwy 1 and over to Ely then back down through Virginia, Northern WI, Down old 210. All kinds of great places to ride.
One good tip, Don't go up the same weekend as Grandma's Marathon, sometime in June you will have to look it up. This event brings many thousand people into Duluth and can cause a major headache if you are not there for the run.

Newman,

I'm in Duluth every day. Built4 milesofbicycle trail along theNorth Shore two years ago; droveto Tofte 3 days a week for most of two summer so I am intimately familiar with the area. Superior Shores in Two Harbors is very nice buton the high end and a bit pricey. There are other motels in Two Harbors though. And Duluth is only 20 miles southwest.

A nice ride from TH would be north on Lake County Hwy 2 until it meets No.1, from there to Ely, Mn; gateway to the BWCA. You can then ride No. 1 back to the south and east, through Isabella and Finlandto MN 61 alongNorth Shore and back to TH. There are pleanty of other cool places to ride too. The North Shore of Lake Superior is very scenic and there are lots of overlooks, a few state parks, gift shops, etc, etc between TH and Grand Marais. That would be a fun day ride too.

MnDOT has been busy for quite a few years now improving segments of the road; adding passing lanes, widening, etc so there are a few opportunities to get past the "leaf watchers", but there are few stretches that need work yet too. 61 has straight stretches to wind it out and pleanty of curvy stretches too. It's the only route from Duluth to Thunder Bay, Ont so it gets a fair amount of truck traffic - just be aware of that. Except for the new passing lanes I mentioned, it's two lanes the whole way. If you need more info just let me know.

I've already signed up for the MN HOG rally in June. Hope to see you there.

Interstate 35 from the Twin Cities to Duluth is a mess, I won't be subjecting my ride or my rear to that road!

Get off of I35 and take the old Highway 61 instead... you won't get there as fast, but more scenic and some cool old towns to pass through.

Not sure if I'm going to make it or not, but maybe I'll motor up for a day.

Try heading up 169 to Grand Rapids then either 2 to Duluth, or to Hibbing, across 37 to 53 down to town. Great rides and a few extra mile in the Northland. The 2 lane roads in lake country are just f-ing awsome.

I'm going to try to make it, if my schedule will permit.
