Default Help Me Understand?

Over the years I heard stories and read post on this and other Forums about H.D dealers reporting the VIN numbers of customers with trailer hitches on their bikes; and consequently; Harley voiding the warranty on those bikes. I don’t know that these stories are 100% factual but the mere fact that I’ve heard them so often; I can only assume there is some validity to them.

My question is: assuming that these accounts are accurate; what possible motive would a dealership and/or their employees have to go out of their way to report a customer?

When a dealer performs warranty work, they are reimbursed by Harley; if a warranty is revoked, it seems to me that the tad-a-tail dealer just stabbed themselves in the pocket book! Does the reporting employee receive some sort of a bounty or kick back for each customer they report?

Help me understand what the possible motive could there be for a dealer to be a stool-pigeon!

I'm not sure the dealer is stabbing himself in the pocket. If he is doing warranty work he is getting paid less by the MOCO than if he was charging you.

Had no problem with my dealer. They helped me wire the bike for the trailer.

My dealer asked the factory if the reverse would handle backing up a trailer, and they told him they didn't know, but I would just have to try it. So I dont think I will have a problem with my dealer. Until I have a problem with reverse. lol

I guess my real question is: (and I probably did a poor job of expressing myself in my original post) if a dealer turned your VIN Number into MOCO and as a consequence, they voided your warranty; would you have any further dealings with that dealership?

Personally, I would not and I would go out of my way to let everyone I could possibly reach, know what that dealer did! That’s what I meant by suggesting that the dealership stabbed themselves in the pocket book.

But the question sill remains: why would they do this; what is their motivation?

Jimer, don't think we could answer that. Just guess at it. Maybe some dealers go by the book and others don't.

Jimer: I sure don't know why a dealer would go out of his way to do that.

I think that they would report you if in fact there was something majorly wrong with your scoot and didnt feel the need to honor your warranty. You would then have to pay outta pocket. Meaning they would make more money on you than what they get compared from the Motor Company for warranty work.
