Would installing a Ridemaxx plus get us to a richer cooler motor?Just want cooler and maybe more mpg.Would the Ridemaxx,Jackpot head pipe and SE slip ons get the job done?
I'd like to get these items one at a time.Would the one to start with be the headpipe?
Cooler and more mpg do not go together. One of the reasons these engines run so hot is that they are mapped so lean. To cool them down with a tuner you add more fuel which decreases mpg. Having said that, a good tuner can help you manage both by richening up the mixture in certain areas like idle or WOT and then leaning it out while cruising for better mpg. I use the Power Commander V with autotune and Jackpots. Other tuners can do what you require as well. I have never used the Ridemaxx but it looks interesting.
I think the Ridemaxx suggests it has the best stock map and the best economy map and the best power map and you can select whatever one you want.Do not know if it is true, just read it.
Geting the engine operating cooler is possible, but the mpg is a subjective issue. You have take into consideration,
How well the engine is tuned
How good the gas is your buring ( todays gas with the 10% ethonol loses it octane sitting in storage at the gas station faster ) most station sell a lot less high test
How you ride the trike
How much weight your adding to the trike ( passenger, trailer )
How windy it is when you ride ( trike are bricks in the wind )
Are yah riding in the city, country, or highways
And last but not least how many hills and mountains are you riding up and down
I have gotten as high as 45mpg in Wyoming riding I80 @75-80mph and as low as 27mpg
My average has been around 33-35.
You have to remember the engine is already pulling 175+ extra pounds of weight before you sit on it
After V&H, SE Stage 1 AC, and supposedly an updated 09 MAP, I have been averaging 30 on the hwy, less in the city.
Cooling it have now been using Redline 20-60, and just installed a UltraCooler. So far appears to have dropped temp to 235 in 80+, LA traffic. I am having an issue of now heating up to at least 180 taking about 20-30 minutes of riding. This has been experienced over the last week in 65-80 degree weather.
The real test is the end of next week am off to Vegas from LA. I'll keep you posted on oil temps.
So far I feel I am real close to an acceptable oil temp. Still need to stop burning my thighs from the external heat from the pipes!
Have also been investigating the Jackpots, but will not change headpipes until I can find a darn Dyno to set it up. Cannot find one anywhere in so. cali.
I have no feel for the Ridemax. Like others have said cooler is a balancing act between tuning it for a efficient crusing range and richer mixture at idle. Timing also plays a big part in teh over all tune.
Unfortunately I have not been able to find someone to be able to dyno a trike but this is what I have done. I had my local bike shop that does dyno tuning put a tune in my bike that matches a tune that he put in another bike with the same modifications that I have done to mine. Then I road it for 500 miles to see how it felt and the bike ran great but the mileage was around 30mpg so I brought it back and tweaked the air fuel ratio a little and know I get an average of 35mpg and the bike runs great and I have no real heat issues.

It sounds like you got your problems resolved. There is an HD shop in Galitin, Pa called Larry's that have a Trike dyno.
