I never can understand the people who comment on towing when they don't. I was going to stay out of this as I am still getting the new bike ready for this spring to tow my trailer. No, I have never towed it with my shovel head but have with the Valkyrie since 06'. I've made two round trips over the ALCAN in 06' and 09' and have over 25,000 miles towing it.
I really enjoy reading every ones post's about towing with there HD as all I get is how it will "void your warranty". I bought the best touring bike period and that's what I'm setting it up to do. I'll be heading out the last week of June to see a little bit more of America.
For those who tow and have posted, thank you.
Saddlebag Liners / Luggage optimize the amount of gear that can be packed into a saddlebag for extended touring. Once at the destination just pullem out, much easier than living out of a saddlebag. Go to www.BigBikeOutfitters.com for full grain leather luggage that fit inside 1993 2011 HD touring models saddlebags. Road King Leather Saddlebag models available as well.
nice advertising plug that has nothing to do with original post
If you are pulling a trailer without the chains you are a Jerk! Not only is it illegal but if you kill someone there will be no mercy. Take the responsibility! Cross the chains as they are meant to be and there will not be an issue.
As for the nay sayers on trailer pulling I would bet they never have pulled one to know what they are talking about.
and you sir dont now the laws and are quite ignorant on trailors behind motorcycles!!!!!!!!!
I too pull my trailer 3-4 times per year. Like other's here have said, its not for everyone, and you must use your head while doing so. Know your weights both loaded and empty, this allows you to use a fish scale to adjust and get your tongue weight set properly. Give yourself more room for everything...starting...stopping...turning...etc.. .
What I don't understand why the ones who never pulled a trailer can spill out more garbage than truth. Common sense is all it takes whether you are pulling a trailer behind your bike or any trailer behind any vehicle. If you have not pulled a trailer before, but want to, take time to pull it empty, then with weight. Then when you are ready, fill it with all your camping gear and go enjoy life.
When the wife and I camp, we prefer to camp with all the "comfy's" we can bring. At my age, I prefer sleeping on a queen size air mattress. I like sitting in my camping chair around the camp fire. I prefer to grill my steaks on my gas grill. I like the idea of my favorite beverage just steps away from my chair....."honey, would you bring me another one please"...

Google it and you will find that according to the NHTSA safety chain laws exist in every state for pulling a trailer. The chain acts as a secure backup in case the trailer hitch breaks or malfunctions and the chains must cross and form an "X". If you know something the NHTSA doesn't know, maybe you should give all of us a source just so we won't be ignorant.
I have had a trailer behind my '04 Standard many times. On a group ride last year we had 11 bikes and 5 of them were pulling trailers with no issues. Of course it's going to make the bike handle a little differently at slow speeds, but you've got to be ready for that. Use your head and enjoy your ride.
