Hacked, Conversions and Trailering"Harley Sidecar, Conversion Trikes and Motorcycle Pull Behind Trailering Enthusiasts"
A forum for the discussion of your sidecar, Conversion Trike or Pull Behind Motorcycle Trailer.
I just acquired a home made roof top cargo type trailer. It has 4.80 - 8 tubed tires that need to be replaced. Wheels are 4 lug, rusted.
I figure to replace the bearings, wheels, tires and and go with tubeless.
There are different ratings, types etc.
Any suggestions that you know work with a MC?
The 6 ply load rating is more than enough. As another option to look at for replacement wheels and tires is Harbor Freight. They have 4 lug 4 ply wheel and tire which is still plenty for the trailer to use behind your MC and with a 20% off coupon it might save you a few dollars.
Couple of things to note
1) Most only run about 20-22lbs max in the tires. Anymore than that, the tires will wear in the middle
2) Make sure the axle is square to the hitch. If the alignment is off it will scrub the tires bald pretty quick.
3) Keep about 15-18lbs of tongue weight on the hitch and the bulk of the remainder of weight over the trailer tires. If the weight is behind the trailer axle the trailer will fish tail on you
I pulled one on a 7500 mile trip with tires bought from walmart did fine. friends of mine have build those type of trailers from harbor freight and the main problem was tongue was to short and trailer fishtailed until the add 20" length to it. they also ran walmart tires. good luck. and remember plan ahead leave yourself plenty of breaking room.
Just got back from HF. No tires or wheels that will work. Maybe some later when truck gets in.
Going to wire it this weekend. Thinking LED all the way around. HF has a set with coupon $25. I have LED tail lights that flash when brakes are applied 5 times. Do you think this LED set will need a load balancer or something to work?
As far as wiring goes, if you are still using incandescent bulbs on your MC then no load equalizer is needed. If you have LED turn signal bulbs on the MC already you should have a load equalizer installed. If so, the load will handle the extra LEDs with no problems

No lugged tires and rims at all. All center shaft.
Just remember how fast those tiny 8 inch tires are turning to keep up with the 16 or larger tires on the bike. If you are doing 70, they are in the 150 range. I don't think I want Chinese tires having any bearing on my or my wife's life. You should buy a trailer with at least 12 inch tires and rated for boat trailer use, not for wheel barrows.I have 12 inch tires from Goodyear and rest easy when pulling.
