Ignition/Tuner/ECM/Fuel InjectionNeed advice on ignition issues? Questions about a tuner? Have questions about a EFI calibration or Fuel Injection? Tips on Engine Diagnostics, how to get codes, and what they mean. Find your answers here.
I have an 05 EGlide Std fuel injected. The other day I washed my bike. I took it for a ride and the engine coughs and sputters and backfires when you give it the gas and nearly dies. I pulled the plugs. The front plug looks good. The rear cylinder plug was wet. I tried drying the connections as best I could but I'm still having this problem. What would cause the rear plug to get wet?? I would think that the spark plug wire for that cylinder is not carrying full current to the plug. Does this sound right or maybe I just don't understand. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Well it's worth checking , if it is realy wet it will suck the water into the cylinders and cause bad running ... easy to check ! Got to start somewhere...
At this point I'll try anything. Would that cause the rear cylinder plug to get wet?? I also found something else to check and thats the ECM. There is a post in the electrical tips and hints section that this is also a common problem when the ECM get wet.
The plug is wet from fuel, not water. Fuel fouling is usually caused by poor spark energy failing to ignite the mixture. I would remove the plug wires from the coil towers, clean them with contact cleaner, and re-install with silicone dielectric grease.
Also, be sure and check the coil case very closely for cracks.
And be careful about spraying water under your seat and gas tank and behind the headlight area. Water can get into electrical connectors and cause all kinds of gremlins. The good news is, once everything dries out everything goes back to normal (usually).

I had this same EXACT thing happen to me. [:@]
It turned out that I got water in the connection between the ECM and my PCIII plug. Water runs down the wire and gets into the multi-pin connecter. Are you running a power commander?
I had to mount my connection up high so water couldn't run down the harness to the plug. I also die-electric greased the connections.
I bet the water shorted out the ECU connection to fire the rear cylinder, that's why it looked wet. Check your ECM connections. See if any are corroded or are wet.
I have an 2006 Ultra Classic, with power commander III, washed it Sunday and after it was running very rough, back firing, checked plugs, they were fouled, replaced them, a little better, finally checked the power commander III and found the wiring harness connection from Power Commander III to stock wire harness full of water. Blew it out with air hose, Die-electric grease and taped connection. You would think with those rubber gaskets it wouldn't leak like that . It runs great again now .
